China has not approved importation of GM grain seeds
03/05/2010
China has not approved imports of any genetically modified (GM) grain seed, according to the Biosafety Office of Agricultural GMO under the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) this week.
Internet rumors circulated several days ago that the MoA had approved the importing and extensive sowing of GM grain seeds. However, the MoA refuted the rumors, saying that it had never permitted any GM grain seeds to be imported, and that no GM crops are being planted in the country.
Up to now, the Minnistry of Agriculture has issued safety certificates for imports of GM cotton, soybean, corn, and rice. These GM crops shall only be used for raw materials processing.
