GMO-Free is fastest-growing corporate-brand claim

GMO-free claims are the fastest growing claims on US store brands, according to the Nielsen Company. Sales of GMO-free labeled products increased 67% in 2009 and were worth $60.2 million.
Store brands or private label products account for almost 40% of items making health and wellness claims related to preservatives; one in four organic products; and nearly one in five items making “natural” and reduced fat claims in food, drug, and mass channels. Other popular, fast-growing claims among store brands in 2009 included gluten-free (62%), absence of specific fat (53%), and lower cholesterol (45%).
