Blue Corn - Blue corn is an open-pollinated variety of food grade corn generally grown under contracts that is used in special premium corn chips, corn tortillas, corn bread mixes and other uses. Blue corn chips are popular at Mexican restaurants, health food and organic food stores.

White Corn - White corn is a lighter colored variety of hybrid food grade corn with special starch traits that is popular for use in cereals, corn chips, tortillas, snack foods and corn meal. White corn should be grown as an IP isolated crop to minimize chances of cross pollination with other corn varieties. Most white corn in the U.S. s produced under contract with food processor traders.

Yellow Food Grade Corn - yellow food grade corn is a more traditional variety of food grade corn, also used in chips, tortillas, cereals and snack food uses, and is generally grown as an identity preserved contract crop providing premium pricing for growers.

Waxy Corn - Waxy corn is a special variety considered a valuable source of industrial starch. Waxy corn’s starch granules are nearly 100 percent amylopectin, compared to 75 percent for regular yellow dent corn. It is used by wet millers, can be used for feed, and some is exported.

Organic Corn - there is a strong market that provides strong premiums for identity preserved, certified organic corn. Organic corn is not considered especially difficult to produce using organic methods, but it is grown in an integrated rotation with other nutrient providing crops and often livestock production. As with all organic crops, synthetic pesticides and standard commercial fertilizers are prohibited from being used in organic production.

Non-GMO corn for food and feed - there remains a strong export market for non-GMO corn in several export market countries where GMO crops are under restriction or prohibited. In some countries, GMO corn is allowed for feed uses but not for food uses. Non-GMO corn provides an opportunity for growers to earn premium prices when it is maintained identity preserved, meets tolerances, and is marketed through traders who have access to the premium markets. Non-GMO conventional corn is widely grown, due to requirements for refuge acres by producers growing biotech corn. There are opportunities for premium returns for managing and marketing non-GMO corn as certified identity preserved.

Distillers Dried Grains and Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) - DDGs and DDGS are co-products of ethanol production that provide rich feed nutrients for feeding beef cattle, dairy beef, dairy cattle, poultry, swine and sheep. The Upper Midwest region of the U.S. is home to many ethanol producing plants that also produce and export some of the highest quality distillers dried grain products to customers around the world. Advances are being made in the quality and knowledge of feeding DDGS. Containerized shipping of DDGS also has benefit for shippers and customers, and is available from a number of plants from the MSA region.

#1 & #2 Corn for Multiple Uses - several MSA member companies also source and market basic #1 and #2 GM corn to customers for many uses. Often MSA members will source, ship and deliver a higher quality #1 corn that is handled as a “soft IP” crop – not allowed to be co-mingled with other grain from another source, and often shipped in containers from the source to the customer. This “soft IP” marketed corn also often produces a smaller premium for the grower, country elevator or handler.
