| Organic soybeans - Organic soybeans provide the highest premiums to producers. Recent MSA surveys have found that prices to farmers for certified organic soybeans can range from $18 to as high as $30 per bushel. Organic production requires intense, careful management with no use of synthetic chemicals or synthetic fertilizers or GMO seed varieties on their farm for three years prior to being certified, plus careful harvesting, record-keeping, segregated storage and shipping from the farm to the processor to the food retailer in a coordinated system. | Low Linolenic soybeans - Low linolenic varieties of soybeans are new biotech, special-trait soybeans that have been developed that are low in saturated fats than commodity soybeans and produce oil with very low or no trans-fatty acids. “Low Lin” beans are first wave of special biotech grains developed for targeted nutritional health purposes. Low linolenic soybeans are generally grown in the southern parts of the MSA region including Iowa, southern Minnesota, Wisconsin and southern South Dakota. Monsanto’s Vistive brand, Asoyia’s ultra low-linolenic, Dupont Pioneer’s TREUS brand are among leading low linolenic technology beans being produced. | High Oleic soybeans - High oleic soybeans are another version GM special trait soybean technology now developed as a new generation IP crop to offer nutritional values. High oleic soybeans are promoted as “heart-healthy” because their oil is high in mono-unsaturated fat compared to commodity soybeans, and lower in saturated fat. Like low linolenic soybeans, high oleic soybean oil does not require hydrogenation, which enables food processors to produce foods with negligible amounts of trans fats. High oleic soybeans are being grown in the development phase and are on track for commercialization of products containing the trait in 2009. | ||
